I found the reason for my problem: I have a cursor theme (Neutral_Plus) in my ~/.icons folder; it is displayed as an "icon theme" in the user interface settings manager. Upon selecting it, everything went down, I had to manually change the entry in the appropriate configuration file back to another icon theme.
