Without installing the patch from #48 (but keeping up with mainstream
updates), I have noticed a change to the behaviour of this bug (on a
dell D620 running 64-bit Xubuntu 11.10, running on mains).

I now find that if the system is left for a short while, the screen dims
as expected. Pressing any key restores normal brightness.

If the system is left for a long while, the screen brightness is not
restored but has to be jacked up slowly with the keyboard brightness
control.

In neither case is the backlight switched off permanently.

I'm not sure if this is due to a staged reduced-brightness / screen off
feature, where the brightness is not correctly restored after the screen
is turned off (which sounds like one of the early bug reports), or
perhaps there is more than one application attempting to control the
backlight with different timing and different strategies.
