Without installing the patch from #48 (but keeping up with mainstream updates), I have noticed a change to the behaviour of this bug (on a dell D620 running 64-bit Xubuntu 11.10, running on mains).
I now find that if the system is left for a short while, the screen dims as expected. Pressing any key restores normal brightness. If the system is left for a long while, the screen brightness is not restored but has to be jacked up slowly with the keyboard brightness control. In neither case is the backlight switched off permanently.
