The two patches by Takashi Iwai to fix this bug ("screensaver backlight
stuck off, system looks hung") have now been applied to the standard
Ubuntu 11.10 kernel. One of the patches appears in the recently
released 3.0.0-14 series kernel and resolves the problem for many
systems. The other patch will appear in the forthcoming 3.0.0-15 series
kernel and should resolve the problem for all the rest of the affected
systems. I will continue to maintain my 'stuck-backlight' kernel PPA
(which includes the patches) until the 3.0.0-15 kernel gets released:

My thanks to Takashi Iwai and Alex Davis for the fixes, and everyone
here for the testing and feedback.
@Ekimia- The old gnome-settings-daemon fix for this issue is now
obsolete -- that patch will not be applied. Use the kernel PPA instead.
