I'm using an Asus N53S as well, currently with 3.0-14 on Ubuntu 11.10 and it has the same symptoms, both suspend and hibernate fail and the screen goes black, the disk seems to turn off, the wireless seems to turn off and can't switch to terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) and num lk doesn't react anymore.
