dpkg --version does nothing except print out the version number. If it coredumps then either (a) your hardware is not working properly now or (b) the files on disk or cached copies in RAM are corrupted which suggests that your hardware was not working properly at some previous point. If you think the problem was transient then you should restore from your backups or reinstall. Otherwise you should starting doing hardware debugging/testing.
