Okay, I tested the problem more. With upstream kernel, I can get the
picture to external display with HDMI if I boot the computer display
connected. But this way I can't get picture to internal display, even
though Ubuntu display manager recognizes internal display and extends
the screen to both of displays (disabling and enabling display doesn't
help). If I plug the display after login, it works quite well (still
some glitches though, usually I have to disconnect and connect it again
to get the output working).

I can't get the external display with HDMI working at all using
Precise's kernel linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic. I tried with display
connected when booting up the computer or connecting the display when in
LightDM login screen, and it will display output on external until I log
in to X. I've also tried to connect the display after login, but then
both screen go blank. Console and LightDM login screen are displayed
nicely on the external and internal display.

If needed, I can try to explain the problem more presice and/or test
with some other settings...
