@Paul comment 66

Well I had made no changes to my guest account prior to trying it. I
think I got the idea of trying the guest account from this bug report,
though I kind of forget.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/963633

As far as I know gnome 3 worked fine in 11.10, though that was probably
with the old driver. I was using gnome 3d on and off myself.

One problem I have is that I often need to have the latest cuda toolkit
and hence the latest nvidia drivers in good working order on my linux
boxes. For now that means no unity 3d and no compiz for me.

I am intrigued however by the possibility that there is some system
setting that will get it to work since my guest account does. I have to
presume that that fluke is hardware specific. I have an nvidia gtx 280
card, which I suppose is now an older card.

>From the link you provided it appears that the guest account uses
whatever settings the new account default is, so you may be out of luck
with regards to such a fix. Have you altered the new account defaults
in any way? Perhaps I will try that approach myself and see if a new
account results in a working unity 3d. More later then...
