Hi Joseph, Thank you for your help. I feel like I'm really learning something here :)
I tried 3.3.4, 3.4 RC 4 amd 3.4 RC 5 and didn't get the problem but I'm reluctant to mark this as fixed upstream... I've rebooted a couple of times with 3.2.0 during the process and it isn't misbehaving either. I've not been able to install the nVidia binary blob with the Additional Drivers tool under 3.4 (the installation fails) so I've not been able to run my heaviest duty graphical application (the Firestorm 4.0.1 client for the Second Life virtual world http://www.phoenixviewer.com). I've long suspected the nVidia closed source driver has been involved in most of the crashes I've had. Can you help me with getting the nVidia driver working with 3.4 so I can test on a level playing field please?
