I've manage to radically reduce the instability on my machine my upgrading my NVIDIA drivers from 295.40 to 295.49: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/+build/3482042 (i386). amd64 can similiarly be grabbed from launchpad)
