Oh. Forgot to mention that this did not solve the problem.

Rebooting to the previous kernel (23) still gives me "evms_activate is
not available", however, booting the current kernel (24) gives no error,
but nothing happens. No error is printed and no passphrase prompt is
shown. If I press Esc to see what happens behind the boot splash, it is
just black. No lines of text.
