The unsupported hardware watermark is with the proprietary fglrx
drivers, right?

The blank screen with the open-source drivers in 12.10 might be fixed in
the upstream 3.6-rc4 kernel thanks to this commit:

drm/radeon: fix dig encoder selection on DCE61

Was using the DCE41 code which was wrong. Fixes
blank displays on a number of Trinity systems.

As you can see, this has also been cc'd to the stable kernel series, so
it will probably end up in 12.04 at some point in the future.
