@Rand: I had this with virtualbox or vmwareplayer running (do not remember
which because I use both) and a vm was booting. Disabling some kernel flag
related to watchdog helped and later using updated versions of virtualbox
and vmware solved. The issue anyway.

There is a feature in the kernel (I think it is called watchdog or so) that
tries to identify hangups and then triggers a reboot which is a good
behavior for servers at least. However in my case it was a "false positive"
because disabling the feature in grub did not bring any lockup but no more
auto-reboots.
