I wouldn't worry too much about the patches disappearing.   As long as
they don't cause any regressions while the proposed kernel is being
tested, then you should see the updated kernel and backlight fixes go
out very soon.   Some more info on the stable release cadence can be

The backlight issues for this laptop have been rather tricky to address,
and the 3.8 kernels for raring are the first ones to natively carry any
of the work from upstream in them (hence no need for a special ppa).  As
you can see, it's taken some work to get it right, but, 13.04 and higher
should eventually contain a permanent fix.
