This issue doesn't affect image files, only LVM.

Changing dynamic_ownership = 1 in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf seems to solve
the issue. When the vm is stopped ownership is root:root, when started
becomes libvirt-qemu:kvm.

What sounds strange is that this problem raised from a certain time, but sadly 
I cannot tell from which version.
