i got exactly the same problem on kubuntu. I had the same problem on my old computer and now i got a new computer with a totally different hardware, a fresh installation and it does the same thing. I can tell that it only happens when i don't use the computer during some time (at least one hour). My old configuration : Pentium 4 Motherboard MSI 865 PE neo2 graphic card ati radeon 9600
My new configuration : intel core 2 duo Motherboard MSI P35 neo graphic card nvidia 8600 -- Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU.
