Same but different here on Gutsy beta (updated from feisty using update- manager -c -d). No sounds during login, no sounds when trying to set them using System->Preferences->Sound->System Sounds (the test button does not produce any sound) but no problems with sounds in applications. Pulseaudio (which I had to manually install by the way...) works OK, applications use it, sound does not skip (had to add myself to the pulse-rt group first...) but no login/logout/ready sounds...
