Then restart (from command line or menu). On restart is when the desktop has trouble. This is xfce as put together in xubuntu/ubuntustudio. I haven't tried KDE or Unity. I agree fully that the trouble is with application itself. If there was a replacement, I would have already suggested it. I don't know what the difference between qt4 and qt5 is.
