Same problem here, also right when I upgraded from 15.10 to 16.04. It only happens with the external monitor, and only after logging into gnome. I'm on a Asus zenbook UX303U with NVIDIA GeForce 940M. I need to plug in many different external monitors and projectors for presentations, so having it hang even once in a while is not a solution.
