2 Höst 1. It's simply not possible that you were using the same driver every and each ubuntu release because kernel API is constantly changing.
2. Since you are a dualboot user there is a high probability that you already had an updated firmware from windoze session. That's why you had no issues at some point. But now it's fixed and the stock firmware is being loaded at every driver startup.
