The I2C comment gave me a hint, which led to a solution.

But I still have a question of what changed and what can be done to warn
the user about the change.

I removed the file:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_i2c_hid.conf?field.comment=The I2C comment

I removed the file:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_i2c_hid.conf

I still have the following lines in blacklist.conf:

# causes failure to suspend on HP compaq nc6000 (Ubuntu: #10306)
blacklist i2c_i801
