The touchscreen works for John with the upstream 4.12 final kernel found here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.12/
That kernel does not have CONFIG_I2C_SLAVE set. Maybe one thing to try would be to boot with that kernel, confirm the touchscreen works, then capture the config options from the running kernel.
