Please everyone keep reports of fglrx usage out of this particular bug
report. Fglrx is a closed source driver that cannot be supported or
fixed by Ubuntu. Also, specifically keep NVIDIA cards to their own bug
report(s), and they are always currently using closed source driver for
3D. And if you're using Ubuntu 7.04, try Ubuntu 7.10. Thank you.

That said, compiz has worked fluently and without any problems here on
Radeon X800 with the (default) open source driver.

After filtering NVIDIA users and fglrx driver users out, which people
using Ubuntu 7.10 do have hanging and which Radeon cards do they have?
It seems Mobility Radeon X300 / X700 are one, but I thought X300 was
already blacklisted for gutsy because of some earlier report? And one
9600 AGP user. It also would seem like not all users of such cards
experience hangs, so the actual problem might be eg. in the motherboard
AGP/PCI-E support.
