I upgraded from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04 and it failed in the process (because of cinnamon-common bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cinnamon/+bug/1759127, I think). I manage to have all packages upgraded in the end, although cinnamon fails to start (different issue, I would say, just letting you know as it could be the thing that made the crash dialog showed up later)...
