Hi James. I think it would be a great loss of time to search for a hard-
to-tracedown GTK-related bug in those dialogs that serve a feature that
has been long non-working, and are no longer there in the current
release. I think the right action here is to backport the removal code -
while huge in "footprint", those changes are mostly fairly trivial.

My general stance regarding bugs in older versions is this: 
Variety is an entirely non-mission-critical application, that is also heavily 
dependent on volatile Internet APIs. It's entirely possible that a past 
"stable" release gets sufficiently outdated to be non-functional, and it's 
usually less risky to bring it to a more current state than to apply special 
bugfixes to the old releases (as those can have unpredicted side effects).
