The problem is missing libsmb.so from libgnomevfs2-extra package! It is there in trusty(14.04) but it is gone in xenial and further Ubuntu distros. It is also missing in upstream Debian jessie and futher debian distros, but is present in wheezy package. You have to ask the package maintainer to put it back as it is needed by GC to browse smbshares.
