** Description changed:

  # What happens:

  In Ubuntu 16.04 / elementaryOS, after session logout, I get a black
  screen (screen is off, not illuminated as a black background), with no
- user input options.
+ user input options, and unable to switch to consoles using
+ Ctrl+F1/F2/etc.

  # What should happen:
  Go back to the session greeter where I can log in again.

  # How this happens:

  This happens after a couple of hours of intensive use (4 Gb of RAM almost
maxed-out, swapped about 2Gb on an 8Gb partition).
  If I use the computer for a half hour or so, this problem doesn't happen.

  # Workarounds tested:

  - Disabled services such as MegaSync and Dropbox, problem persists.
  - Switched kernels: 4.4 LTS series (currently 4.4.0-133-generic) and 4.13 &
4.15 HWE series; problem persists.
  - Switched xorg stack versions: xorg regular / LTS and the HWE branch;
problem persists.
