So I went ahead and deleted “nomodeset” from grub so it only read “quiet
splash” and updated grub and rebooted. It hung on the purple screen. I
rebooted into recovery mode and issued the command: cat /proc/cmdline and
got the following:

BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-43-generic
root=UUID=2d93d825-1bcb-4155-aad5-cfdb5dce95ab ro recovery nomodeset

I then changed grub back to “quiet splash nomodeset” and rebooted and it
was able to get past the purple screen and in to Ubuntu.

Should I replace “nomodeset” with something else, rather than just deleting
it?

Thanks again for the help.
