I have no idea how it normally works. This is the first bug I've raised and I ended up having to do a lot of work. The only feedback I ever got from a Ubuntu team member was regarding the "triage" of the bug. I haven't heard about anyone actually working on this.
I think the key problem is that we don't know exactly what it is in the kernel that fixes the problem. If it is that little section of code in ec.c, I guess it wouldn't be too hard to test. Just download the 2.6.22-14 source, modify ec.c, recompile and you'd find out. The main problem for me is that I can't get both the kernel and the restricted modules to compile for 2.6.22-14 due to the crazy issues with "version", "kernel version" and "abi-version". If someone knows how to do this, it'd be great if they could try it out. So, unfortunately I'm going to be satisfied with getting 2.6.23 to work and I think this will benefit my marriage :) R.
