Had a panic moment when it appeared my i1pro meter had stopped working.
It seems I had not used it since upgrading to 18.04.LTS when I started
having problems with this issue. As I plugged the unit in gnome-control-
center opens at the device colour profile page. When I open a terminal
and try to use chartread I get:

Read Target Test Chart, Version 2.0.0
Author: Graeme W. Gill, licensed under the AGPL Version 3
usage: chartread [-options] outfile
 -v Verbose mode
-c listno Set communication port from the following list (default 1)
    ** No ports found **

etc

or with chartread -D I get:

Read Target Test Chart, Version 2.0.0
Author: Graeme W. Gill, licensed under the AGPL Version 3
usage: chartread [-options] outfile
 -v Verbose mode
-c listno Set communication port from the following list (default 1)
Argyll 'V2.0.0' Build 'Linux 64 bit' System 'Linux #81-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 26
12:20:02 UTC 2019 4.15.0-72-generic x86_64'
usb_check_and_add: failed to open '/dev/bus/usb/004/025'
    ** No ports found **

As a last resort I uninstalled gnome-control-center with synaptic and
the device is available again to chartread -D :

Read Target Test Chart, Version 2.0.0
Author: Graeme W. Gill, licensed under the AGPL Version 3
usage: chartread [-options] outfile
 -v Verbose mode
-c listno Set communication port from the following list (default 1)
    1 = '/dev/bus/usb/004/008 (GretagMacbeth i1 Pro)'

I re-installed and it's back to no-go. It's as though gnome-control-center is
grabbing the device and not allowing access even when the window is closed.
