We just updated all of our Ubuntu installations to 20.04 and first everything seems very smooth. But after installing chromium-browser the annoyances began. After slow program starts we realized it's no real deb package anymore and it silently installs a snap! Then users realized the intrusive /home/user/snap folder and asked to move it out of their home directory.
My research took me to this snapd bug and I can't believe this is debated for MORE THAN FOUR YEARS! And there is still no config option available. Holy shit! How is that possible? This snap thing is not ready for production! All snap applications need more than 10 seconds to start on fast SDD systems and bring this intrusive snap folder in the home directory. I can't belive that. Seems Ubuntu is going the Windows 10 way and annoying the user more and more and ships shiny objects which try so solve problems that doesn't even exist. Now we have to uninstall all this snap stuff again and search for the corresponding deb packages Ubuntu has ditched. We really hope Ubuntu will notice they have gone astray and the next LTS version will rely on 100% deb repos again. Otherwise lot's of people will make a switch to other snap-free distros. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575053 Title: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1575053/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
