This sounds like a crash reported in bug 1963758. Could you please look in /var/crash/ for any crash files from gnome-shell and add them to the either this bug report or bug 1963758? Also if you do find a .crash file look for a corresponding .uploaded file which should contain a hash for a crash report uploaded to the Ubuntu Error Tracker which we could look at.
