This bug still exists in Gutsy. It is a monumental pain in the arse. I work around it by logging in, in full Japanese mode. This creates its own problems as I'm not that fluent when I have dialog boxes up, which is a shame. Now the fact that it works in a full Japanese local, but not with a English local is annoying.
