I feel that photo kind of proves my point about how uncommon the
situation is. Not invalid, just uncommon.

I also wonder if you could trick the laptop into using the external
monitor as primary? Maybe if you can configure the BIOS to turn the
machine on in response to USB keyboard/mice while the laptop is fully
closed. Then there would only be one screen during boot and in theory
the bug would never occur.
