I was experiencing these same issues, and the workarounds mentioned in the askubuntu.com thread also fixed things for me. I also noticed system settings was reporting "no audio devices detected". I may have found the root cause, at least for me. As described at https://askubuntu.com/a/1555952/915053, removing /etc/pipewire (which is allegedly an old, defunct config file---I can't vouch for if or when I made it), resolved all these issues and allowed my speakers to be detected, even after reverting the workarounds.
