Omegamormegil was right all along. I'm sorry! It was all a question of properly using Alsamixer. Hope Mervin is as lightheaded as I am and this is his problem, too. BTW, my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base was edited to include "options snd- hda-intel model=6stack-dig".
