Public bug reported:

Kernel 7.0.0-10-generic works perfectly with nvidia-driver 580.126.09 including
external monitors via HDMI/DP.
After any kernel update beyond 7.0.0-10, the system cannot compile/install
nvidia 580.126.09 modules and requires upgrading to 580.142. However, 580.142
causes a complete system freeze when connecting external monitors.
Error from journalctl / dmesg:
[drm] Initialized nvidia-drm 0.0.0 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 2
nvidia 0000:01:00.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes

Unmet dependencies error when trying to install nvidia modules for kernel
7.0.0-13:
sudo apt install linux-modules-nvidia-580-7.0.0-13-generic

Resolving dependencies... Error!
Some packages cannot be installed. This may mean that you have requested
an impossible situation, or if you are using the unstable distribution
that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out
of Incoming.

Unmet dependencies:
linux-modules-nvidia-580-7.0.0-13-generic : Depends: nvidia-kernel-common-580
(>= 580.142)
but 580.126.09-0ubuntu9 is to be installed

Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies. Reached two conflicting assignments:
  1. linux-modules-nvidia-580-7.0.0-13-generic:amd64=7.0.0-13.13 is selected
for install
  2. linux-modules-nvidia-580-7.0.0-13-generic:amd64 Depends
nvidia-kernel-common-580 (>= 580.142)
but none of the choices are installable:
     - nvidia-kernel-common-580:amd64=580.142-0ubuntu2 is not selected for
install because:
       1. nvidia-kernel-common-580:amd64=580.126.09-0ubuntu9 is selected for
install
       2. nvidia-kernel-common-580:amd64=580.142-0ubuntu2 conflicts with other
versions of itself

Steps to reproduce:
Install nvidia-driver-580 (580.142) on kernel 7.0.0-13-generic or 7.0.0.12
Connect external monitor via HDMI or DisplayPort
System freezes completely, requires hard reboot
Everything works fine ONLY if you do not use external monitors

Expected behavior:
External monitors work as they did with 580.126.09 on kernel 7.0.0-10
The driver should at least compile successfully on an older kernel

Workaround:
Booting with kernel 7.0.0-10-generic + nvidia 580.126.09 — fully functional.
