** Description changed:
After logging into Ubuntu 26.04, the Applications Grid ("Show Applications")
is occasionally completely empty. The issue occurs intermittently,
approximately 1 out of every 6 logins.
The search function in the overview continues to work correctly: typing the
name of an application immediately finds and launches it. Only the applications
grid is empty.
Environment:
* Ubuntu 26.04
* GNOME Shell 50.1
* Wayland session
* Ubuntu Dock extension version 105 (default Ubuntu installation)
* No third-party GNOME Shell extensions enabled (only the default Ubuntu
extensions)
Steps to reproduce:
the issue is intermittent and occurs during session startup.
1. Boot the system.
2. Log into the GNOME Wayland session.
3. Open **Show Applications**.
Approximately one login out of six, the applications grid is completely
empty.
Expected result:
The Applications Grid should display all installed applications.
Actual result:
* The Applications Grid is completely empty.
* The overview opens normally.
* The search entry works correctly.
* Searching for installed applications immediately finds them.
* Applications can still be launched from search.
* Logging out and logging back in usually resolves the problem.
Additional observations:
The problem does not appear to be related to the applications database
because installed applications remain searchable and can be launched normally.
Disabling the Ubuntu Dock extension while the issue is present does not
restore the applications grid.
Diagnostic information:
The failing session produces hundreds of messages similar to:
'st_widget_get_theme_node called on the widget ... which is not in the
stage'
When the issue is present:
journalctl --user -b | grep "st_widget_get_theme_node" | wc -l
224
When the session starts correctly:
journalctl --user -b | grep "st_widget_get_theme_node" | wc -l
0
- Many of these messages refer to Show Applications / Dash / Ubuntu Dock
widgets.
- No JavaScript exceptions (JS ERROR, TypeError, ReferenceError) are reported
in the journal.
+ Many of these messages refer to Show Applications / Dash / Ubuntu Dock
+ widgets.
Notes:
The symptoms suggest that the application model is correctly initialized
(search works normally), while the graphical Applications Grid is not properly
attached or populated during session startup.
The intermittent nature of the issue (approximately one login out of six)
suggests a possible startup timing or initialization problem.
