Hardware: - Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 - CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 185H (Meteor Lake) - iGPU: Intel Arc Graphics (Meteor Lake-P, rev 08) — drives both displays - Discrete GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3000 Ada Generation Laptop GPU — not involved in display output (hybrid/Optimus, unused for this bug) - Displays: internal eDP panel + external LG HDR 4K monitor via Thunderbolt dock (MST) Software: - Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS - Kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic (HWE) - gnome-shell 46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.14 / mutter-common 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.16 - Session: Wayland Symptom: The external (non-primary) monitor freezes completely — image, and the mouse cursor stops moving on that screen entirely — while the internal laptop panel keeps working normally. Audio from a video playing on the frozen screen (YouTube) continues uninterrupted, confirming this is a display/compositor stall, not an application pause or a hang of the playing process. Observed twice within an hour of normal use (not around suspend/resume). No relevant errors appear in the kernel or gnome-shell logs at the time of the freeze — journalctl is silent for drm/i915/mutter around the event, which rules out a driver-level fault (unlike comment #14 on #2075526, which showed DMAR/IOMMU faults — my case shows no such errors). Recovery: switching to a VT and back (Ctrl+Alt+F3, then Ctrl+Alt+F2) immediately unfreezes the display without losing the session, consistent with a stuck frame-clock/present cycle that a forced modeset clears. Workaround: Setting MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple in /etc/environment appears to reduce/prevent the freeze (limited observation so far, ~1 day). Happy to attach journalctl output or a mutter --replace trace if useful.
