Additional investigation results After creating this report, I performed extensive troubleshooting.
Environment - Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel - Machine Type: 21MMS57F00 - Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (Meteor Lake) - Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS - Linux 6.17.0-35-generic - GNOME 46 - Wayland Firmware System BIOS: N47ET29W (1.18) Embedded Controller Firmware: 1.16 Intel Management Engine: 1.18.2724 All firmware components are reported as up to date by fwupd. Observed behaviour The problem is fully reproducible. Shutdown was tested using: - GNOME "Power Off" - sudo systemctl poweroff Both produce exactly the same behaviour. Shutdown sequence is normal: - display turns off - fan stops - power LED turns off Approximately 1–3 seconds later the notebook automatically powers on again without pressing the power button. This is not a reboot. Linux successfully completes the shutdown before the system powers on again. systemd-logind systemd-logind reports: "The system will power off now." "System is powering down." No reboot request is issued. journalctl Shutdown completes successfully. No kernel panic. No watchdog reset. No reboot request. Wake sources The following tests were performed: - RTC wakealarm is empty. - Wake-on-LAN disabled. - ACPI wake sources disabled using /proc/acpi/wakeup before shutdown. - USB devices disconnected. - Battery only. - AC adapter connected. The behaviour remains unchanged. Windows comparison Windows 11 on the same hardware shuts down correctly and remains powered off. Hardware history The problem has existed across multiple BIOS versions. The motherboard has already been replaced twice by Lenovo service. The behaviour did not change after motherboard replacement. Firmware validation fwts completed successfully and did not report any critical ACPI firmware errors. Related issue This issue appears to be very similar to Ubuntu Bug #2138359 affecting ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel based on the same Intel Meteor Lake platform.
