Part of our script does this:

vfiles="$(app_prefix_category "$prefix" | grep . | sort -f | uniq | sed
"s+$prefix/++g")" #generate a virtual file system with apps in folders
represented as subdirectories

and terminal output confirms that the sort command (at least when piped)
is not producing sorted output since I have the following errors in the
terminal logs:

comm: file 2 is not in sorted order
comm: input is not in sorted order
