@theofficialgman For context, I have zero involvement in uutils or Ubuntu. I co-maintain GNU coreutils. I agree it is a bad bug. I wish it were fixed. I mentioned this bug months ago on debian-devel, as an example of compatibility concerns [1].
Unfortunately, no one from Canonical has ever communicated with anyone working on GNU coreutils before, during, or after their switch to uutils. Many of the issues they face, and still face, are entirely foreseeable, and we could have voiced our concerns had we known about the decision. Therefore, I have little power to help you here, despite my wishes. Sometimes I complain in Launchpad bug reports, but that typically feels like a pointless endeavour, as you are certainly feeling from this report. I agree there is no workaround for this.
