Public bug reported:

On a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 with the Intel XMM7560 WWAN modem (iosm driver),
the
machine freezes in s2idle suspend and never resumes if it is suspended again a
few
seconds after a resume. Keyboard, power button, lid and AC plug do not wake it;
only a
forced power-off (holding the power button) recovers. Nothing is left in pstore.

Both hangs seen so far have the same signature: shortly after a resume the
kernel logs
"iosm 0000:08:00.0: msg timeout" (the first time followed by "PORT open
refused, phase
A-ROM"), and the very next suspend logs "PM: suspend entry (s2idle)" and
nothing after.

System
- Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-34-generic (7.0.0-34.34, based on 7.0.14)
- LENOVO 21CB000DUS (ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10), BIOS N3AET83W (1.48), EC
0.1.24 at the
  time of the hangs
- Modem: Intel XMM7560 LTE Advanced Pro [8086:7560] rev 01, subsystem
[1cf8:8654],
  firmware 18601.5001.00.01.17.30_GC, driver iosm
- ModemManager 1.25.95-1ubuntu1, WWAN connection active
- /sys/power/mem_sleep: [s2idle] (only state offered)

Steps to reproduce
1. Boot with the WWAN modem enabled and connected through ModemManager.
2. Suspend (systemctl suspend), resume, and suspend again about 6 seconds after
each
resume. Attached cycle-test.sh does this with an RTC wake alarm:
     sudo ./cycle-test.sh control 12 6
3. Within a handful of cycles "iosm ... msg timeout" appears after a resume and
the next
   suspend never returns.

Results (all on 7.0.0-34, same day, same machine)
- Manual suspends, 6-8 s awake between them, modem bound: hung on the 6th
suspend.
Before it: ModemManager "failed enabling modem: Operation was cancelled", then
"iosm: msg timeout" x2 and "PORT open refused, phase A-ROM".
- Script, 6 s awake, modem bound: hung on the 8th suspend, after "iosm: msg
timeout" x4.
- Script, 25 s awake, modem bound: 12/12 resumed.
- Script, 25 s awake, iosm unbound for the whole run: 8/8 resumed.
- Script, 6 s awake, iosm unbound before each suspend and rebound after resume
by the
  attached iosm-sleep.service: 12/12 resumed.

So the hang needs the modem bound and a suspend that arrives while the modem is
still
being re-enabled after the previous resume.

Expected: suspend/resume works regardless of how soon after resume it is
requested, or
at worst the modem fails without taking the whole system down.

Other observations
- Unbinding the driver logs "DMAR: [DMA Read NO_PASID] Request device [08:00.0]
... PTE
Read access is not set" once, plus "iosm: msg timeout" lines.
- Every suspend on 7.0 also logs a DMAR fault for iwlwifi [00:14.3] and "Master
Disable
Timed Out". It occurs on the cycles that resume fine too, so it looks
unrelated; noted
  for completeness.
- On 6.8.0-137/-142 (Ubuntu 24.04) the few suspends in my logs (one per boot)
resumed
without iosm errors. I have not run the rapid-cycle test on 6.8, so I cannot
say this is
  a regression.
- Possibly related upstream thread (same laptop model, iosm "msg timeout" after
  hibernate/suspend, 6.8+):
  https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg363234.html

Workaround
Unbind iosm before sleep.target and rebind on resume (attached
iosm-sleep.service).

Attachments
- journal-extract.txt: filtered journal (PM, iosm, DMAR, ModemManager, logind
lines) for
both hangs and two passing runs; hostname and MAC addresses removed
- cycle-test.sh, cycle-test.log: reproduction script and its log
- iosm-sleep.service: workaround unit
