Hey Simon,

From MM:

The exact changes are available to view on the streamline branch of
git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/grub/+git/ubuntu in the top 5 commits. The
oneline git log shows:

a855df6c1 Streamlining: Drop support for LVM, RAID-5 and RAID-6
022b88968 Streamlining: Drop support for encrypted /boot
26122149b Streamlining: Drop support for rendering images
ee8354a4e Streamlining: Drop Apple partition table support
883394e14 Streamlining: Drop btrfs, hfs+, xfs, zfs FS support

As for what systems are affected by this: any system using `Apple
partition table, btrfs, hfs+, xfs, zfs` as the /boot partition format
will have an inaccesible `grub.cfg` and so will not be bootable if these
changes come into effect.

Anyone with an encrypted `/boot` will have the same issue, as well as
anyone booting off a raid partition using raid-5 or raid-6. Please note
that this does not affect `/home` or `/` partition support from Ubuntu.

The change should then warn/deny upgrade if the `/boot` partition format
matches any of these.

I am not sure of the impact of the image changes. I assume they simply
just don't load the images, but I would need to check. Perhaps if the
grub.cfg contains a .jpg or .png line, warn/deny should be done then
too.

Hopefully ~juliank can elaborate further.

I will dig a bit deeper and report any further learnings

Best,
Artie
