This is still the case in current casper. I checked casper 26.10.2 (the current
development release) and casper 1.498 (noble, which Linux Mint 22.3 and Zorin
OS 18.1 also use for their live sessions). scripts/casper-bottom/19keyboard is
the same file in both.
As the previous comment says, the short forms documented in casper(7) (keyb=,
klayout=, kvariant=, kmodel=) are not read anywhere. 19keyboard starts from
kbd=us and only reads keyboard-configuration/*code=, console-setup/*code= and
kbd-chooser/method=. The manual page also says the keyboard is taken from
locale= when locale= is two lowercase letters; that is not implemented either.
locale= is read by 14locales and only changes the language.
What a user sees: booting Ubuntu Cinnamon 24.04.5 (casper 1.498) with
"klayout=be locale=fr_BE.UTF-8" gives French menus but US keys, in the console
and on the desktop. Anything typed before the installer's keyboard page, such
as a Wi-Fi password, uses US positions, and it looks like a broken keyboard.
With "keyboard-configuration/layoutcode=be locale=fr_BE.UTF-8" instead, the
console, X and the desktop all use the Belgian layout, and the Linux Mint 22.3
ISO gives a Belgian desktop the same way. These were tested in virtual machines
(QEMU). So the missing piece is only how casper reads the boot line.
Two changes would each help:
1.
Make casper(7) true: read keyb=, klayout=, kvariant= and kmodel= as the aliases
the manual page documents (a small change in 19keyboard), or correct the manual
page.
2.
When no layout is given but locale= is, use the layout that
keyboard-configuration's own locale table gives for that locale (console-setup,
debian/keyboard-configuration.config: fr_BE and nl_BE give be, de_CH gives ch,
fr_CH gives ch(fr), fr_CA gives ca, pt_BR gives br, Latin American Spanish
locales give latam). Without locale= nothing changes. Using console-setup's
table instead of a copy in casper is also what bug #219260 asks.
I can write and test a patch for either, in the form you prefer.
Background: I work as a volunteer on Belgian keyboards on Linux. The live-boot
findings, with screenshots, are in section 2 of
https://github.com/belgian-azerty/belgian-azerty-linux/blob/v0.9.7/NOTES.md
(screenshots 11 to 14 in the evidence folder show the klayout= and layoutcode=
boots). Belgium is one of the clearest cases: none of its three languages
(Dutch, French, German) gives the Belgian keyboard from the language alone, so
the country in the locale matters.
