The upstream fix is uutils/coreutils PR #15438 ("install: accept piped
input when replacing an existing file", commit
7222c26f279de3f37de259b3efcdceb140570ec8). It merged on 2026-10-22 and
closed uutils/coreutils#12407, which is the same bug as #11532. No
upstream release has it yet. 0.12.0 predates it.rust-coreutils 0.12.0-1ubuntu2 in 26.10 still fails: $ printf 'a\n' | install -m 0644 /dev/stdin f $ printf 'b\n' | install -m 0644 /dev/stdin f install: No such file or directory Tools that write root-owned config through `sudo install /dev/stdin <file>` fail every time the file already exists. For example, `mise bootstrap` cannot update an apt source in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Could this fix be cherry-picked into the 26.10 package? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2146464 Title: install doesn't overwrite files like coreutils To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/rust-coreutils/+bug/2146464/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
