It's not specific to rhythmbox.  I also tried doing a suspend and resume
while playing mp3's with totem and with the "play" command.  Both
triggered the problem.

Another interesting detail is that whenever the problem occurs there's
also a very soft digital "click" between 2 and 3 times a second, which
is absent normally.

(And lspci identifies the video card as an Intel "Mobile GM965/GL960".
I think (I may have forgotten) that was the only option with this
model.)  For the sound it says:
