Ugh, that failed too. My current theory is that what really matters is whether the machine is docked with USB devices connected at boot. Apparently if I boot undocked, then dock, I can suspend/resume just fine, but if I boot in the dock, suspend will fail unless I disconnect my USB devices first. I haven't tried booting docked and /then/ connecting the USB devices yet.
