In my case, menu.lst do have the "splash" item at the very end. If I remove it, then I see the normal old-day boot lines. This has occurred in both my computers (IBM T40 laptop and a Dell desktop). And, I don't even see "Starting..", perhaps due to the "quieten-grub" edgy spec.
