I have a same problem too, as above, and i tried your solution. After i removed the network-manager package the network was stopped. Wicd started only one time, after that i can't shut down my machine, because wlan0 was busy. After a reboot the wicd is not starting and i dont have any network (wireless, wired). I removed wicd, and i put network manager back, now i have wired network.
