I've found the root cause of my problems. My grub installation is on
another partition and I hadn't updated it after upgrading to Hardy. My
kernel should have been 2.4.26-19. This was causing a conflict loading
GLX :

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
found)

which caused fallback to the VESA driver.

So I think you can close this bug.

Interestingly, while doing all this rebooting and reconfiguring at one
point I used Screen Resolution and was offered a large set of choices
which included 1280x960. I selected it fully expecting the usual
failure to start X and nearly fell off my chair when it worked. Screen
Resolution doesn't offer me that option now and my monitors max
resolution is supposed to be 1024x768.

Thanks for your help.
